The Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation recently awarded a grant to the local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution for their efforts to make history come alive for local students. The community foundation grant will provide reading materials for school media centers that complement the events and characters portrayed. Whit Chapman and Jimmy Boatright, portraying the Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence Button Gwinett and Dr. Lyman Hall, receive the check from Diane Doster, community foundation grants officer.Marshes of Glynn Sons of the American Revolution was founded in 1986 with the mission to promote the study of the American Revolution and to share information with the community through commemorative celebrations of historical events and with students through the presentation of period characters and events. These volunteers have created first person monologues of the life of important historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Benedict Arnold, King George III, Patrick Henry, John Adams, and Ben Franklin and their roles in the American Revolution. They present this in full period costume, speaking as the character themselves, to elementary students throughout Glynn County, interacting with the students and creating an unforgettable encounter. Beginning this year, they will also be making similar presentations for county eighth graders involving key figures from Georgia history, including the signers of the Declaration of Independence: Button Gwinnett, Dr. Lyman Hall, and George Walton. It is their desire to launch additional programs recognizing history teachers of excellence as well as students.
